Cases of knee osteoarthritis in Indonesia are increasing. Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is a thinning of the cartilage in the knee joint. This common condition is typically felt by the elderly. The condition can cause pain, stiffness, and swelling, leading to difficulties in walking long distances, going up and down stairs, and disruptions in daily activities such as worship and exercise. ‘If left untreated, this condition can worsen, causing muscle atrophy, bone weakening, and increased risk of falls,’ explained Orthopedic Consultant Hip & Knee Surgeon Dr. Ivan Mucharry Dalitan, Sp.OT(K) during a media gathering in Mampang, South Jakarta, on Wednesday (11/26/2025). Furthermore, he explained that managing OA should be done as early as possible through low-impact exercises, weight loss, posture improvement, and daily activities. ‘However, in advanced stages, medical interventions like arthroscopy and total knee replacement surgery are often necessary,’ he added. Many people are afraid of surgery when they hear the word knee operation. However, according to Dr. Ivan, not all knee problems must end in surgery. Surgery should be the last resort, not the first step. ‘Orthopedics, especially concerning the knee, is not all about surgery. There are therapeutic approaches available, and we don’t immediately jump to the fourth line,’ he said. This means that when a patient complains of knee problems, doctors do not automatically suggest surgery. They are usually treated with conservative therapies like painkillers, anti-inflammatories, physiotherapy, changes in muscle-strengthening exercise activities, injections to reduce inflammation or improve joint function.
