Understanding the Javan Tiger, Characteristics and the Traces of its Extinction

The Javan Tiger was the apex predator in the forests of Java Island, playing a crucial role in maintaining the ecosystem balance. Besides its ecological function, this tiger was also a part of the social, economic, and cultural life of the Javanese people, revered as a symbol of strength and power. Unfortunately, this endemic species now only exists in historical records. After facing pressures from hunting, habitat destruction, and prey depletion, the Javan Tiger was declared extinct in 1972, leaving significant traces for conservation efforts of other wildlife in Indonesia.
