Unimed do Brasil to take over assistance of Unimed Ferj’s beneficiaries starting in December

The measure was proposed by the regulatory body to representatives of the two Unimeds in a meeting at the agency’s headquarters in Rio. The debate was lengthy: it started at 4 pm and only ended almost at 8 pm. Representatives from the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ), the Federal Public Ministry (MPF), and the State Public Defender of Rio de Janeiro also participated in the meeting.
Unimed do Brasil is not a health insurance operator, but an institutional representative of the cooperatives that make up the Unimed System. It is still unclear whether the company will become an operator to take over Ferj’s portfolio or if it will deliver the administration to another Unimed within the system.
ANS’s CEO, Wadih Damous, told O Globo that, whatever the option, Unimed do Brasil will have 20 days to facilitate the transition:
“I asked them if the time would be enough, and they said yes, but consumers must understand that this is a process,” he said. “Whether they will do this through CNU (Central Nacional Unimed, a nationally operating operator) or another single entity, I do not know, but the care for beneficiaries is guaranteed given Ferj’s inability to honor its debts.
