The US Department of the Treasury issued a license on Wednesday (13) to temporarily lift some sanctions against Russia to allow the landing of Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. On Friday (15), US President Donald Trump will meet with Putin to discuss the war in Ukraine. The meeting between leaders occurs amidst US government pressure on Moscow to end the conflict in Eastern Europe. The measure, signed by the director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the Treasury, temporarily exempts activities related to the meeting from sanctions until August 20. The temporary relief also benefits other sanctioned Russians. Presidents Donald Trump of the United States and Vladimir Putin are expected to meet at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. The location was revealed by the White House, which also stated that the meeting will be a “listening exercise” for Trump, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will not be present. The Republican suggested that there might be a territorial exchange between Russians and Ukrainians to end the war, an idea rejected by Zelensky and criticized by European countries.
