Growing up in North Sumatra, Theresia fondly remembers the abundance of bakso stalls in Medan. She reminisces, “There was a stall every 500 metres and each stall’s bakso was different.” Bakso, the iconic Indonesian meatball, is a culinary delight enjoyed by many. It can be found across the archipelago, with variations in recipes and flavors depending on the region.
The name “bakso” is derived from the Hokkien term “baah-sòo” which means meatballs. These delectable orbs are typically made from a mixture of ground beef and tapioca flour, giving them a unique texture. Bakso is commonly served with a flavorful broth, noodles, and a variety of condiments like soy sauce, chili sauce, and fried shallots, adding layers of taste and aroma to the dish.
In Indonesian culinary culture, bakso holds a special place as a popular street food that caters to diverse palates. Its affordability and availability make it a go-to option for quick and satisfying meals. The meatballs are often served in different forms such as bakso kuah (with soup), bakso goreng (fried), or bakso bakar (grilled), showcasing the versatility of this beloved dish.
While traditionally made with beef, bakso can also be prepared with other proteins like chicken, fish, or shrimp to cater to varying dietary preferences. This adaptability has contributed to bakso’s widespread appeal and its ability to adapt to changing tastes and trends in Indonesian cuisine. Whether enjoyed as a hearty bowl of soup or skewered on sticks as a snack, bakso continues to be a culinary staple in the country.
In recent years, bakso has gained international recognition, with Indonesian communities abroad introducing this flavorful meatball to global audiences. The unique combination of textures, flavors, and spices in bakso has intrigued food enthusiasts worldwide, making it a sought-after dish in Indonesian restaurants around the globe. As a symbol of Indonesia’s rich culinary heritage, bakso remains a cherished comfort food for both locals and visitors alike, offering a taste of authentic Indonesian flavors.
