The Italian Parliament has approved a law that introduces femicide into the country’s criminal legislation. Moving forward, the murder of a woman committed for gender-based reasons will be punished with life imprisonment. This makes Italy one of the few countries where femicide is classified as a separate crime. Cyprus, Malta, and Croatia have previously included the legal definition of femicide in their criminal codes. Deputies unanimously approved the bill. The vote took place on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, established by the UN General Assembly.
