What is known about the PF operation that arrested a group for hacking attack on Caixa Econômica’s PIX

The Federal Police arrested 8 people in connection with hacker attacks on banks. The suspects are believed to have already accessed Caixa’s system and are being investigated for frauds totaling R$ 1.2 billion, in addition to attacks on BMP and Santander. The arrests were made in São Paulo as the group attempted to invade Caixa Econômica Federal’s system to divert funds via PIX. Those arrested, aged between 22 and 46, are facing charges of organized crime and attempted theft through electronic means.

Police arrived at a location in São Paulo where the group was gathered and confirmed an ongoing attack. A stolen workstation from Caixa, providing privileged access to the institution’s internal system, was found at the scene. The suspects were allegedly trying to fraudulently access accounts in the Instant Payment Arrangement (PIX) maintained by financial institutions with the Central Bank to divert funds directly through the system.

In addition to the attack on Caixa, the suspects are also believed to have been involved in two other major attacks, targeting BMP and Santander (formerly HSBC). The arrested individuals are estimated to have caused losses of R$ 1.2 billion to the financial system. Authorities are continuing investigations to identify other members of the gang and determine the full extent of the frauds. The PF is working to trace potential accomplices and ascertain any involvement of individuals connected to financial institutions.
