A recent health alert has been issued globally following confirmation from the World Health Organization (WHO) of a Marburg virus outbreak in Southern Ethiopia. With at least nine cases confirmed, urgent containment measures are in place. Often referred to as ‘Ebola’s cousin,’ the virus is characterized by its high fatality rate and rapid transmission. WHO is collaborating with Ethiopian authorities to prevent further spread & provide treatment. Since its discovery in 1967, the Marburg virus has caused severe hemorrhagic fevers in Africa. Human-to-human transmission occurs through contact with infected bodily fluids or surfaces. Early symptoms include fever, headache, and muscle pain, progressing to organ failure in fatal cases. Diagnosis requires specific laboratory tests for confirmation.
