1959. The philosophical film critic from Cahiers du Cinema, Jean-Luc Godard, is frustrated as his colleagues have already become successful directors. Feeling the need for only a girl and a gun in cinema, he takes money from a powerful producer and starts shooting “Breathless” which revolutionized film language and made a star out of the young Frenchman.
Godard’s life and legacy continue to inspire filmmakers today. Michel Hazanavicius released a comedy in 2017 about the director getting involved in student protests and politics. Richard Linklater portrayed a less controversial period in Godard’s life in a lighthearted film about rebellion. The movie “New Wave” is not named after the director himself but tells the story of the rebels who, with enthusiasm, created possibly the most important film in cinema history.
