Who Was Soeharto, Indonesia’s Late Renowned Leader and Domestic ‘Hero’?

Former Indonesian President Muhammad Soeharto, whose three-decade reign was marred by accusations of massive human rights violations, was posthumously dubbed a ‘domestic hero’ on Monday, sparking violent reactions. The title was bestowed in a ceremony presided over by President Prabowo Subianto, a former martial military officer and Soeharto’s son-in-law, amidst protests from pro-democracy activists and families affected by the former leader’s authoritarian rule. Backed by the United States during the Cold War, Soeharto used the military to control civilian affairs and crush dissent. He was also accused of massive corruption and nepotism benefiting his clan and allies, though no charges were proven and he never faced trial for his alleged crimes.
