Who Was Soeharto, Indonesia’s Late Renowned Leader and Domestic ‘Hero’?

Former Indonesian President Muhammad Soeharto, whose three-decade reign was marred by accusations of massive human rights violations, was posthumously dubbed a ‘domestic hero’ on Monday, sparking violent reactions. The title was bestowed in a ceremony presided over by President Prabowo Subianto, a former martial military officer and Soeharto’s son-in-law, amidst protests from pro-democracy activists and families affected by the former leader’s authoritarian rule.
