Why Brazilian immigrants in Japan fear new prime minister

During the internal party campaign, Takaichi advocated for the creation of a command center focused on immigration. The conservative politician Sanae Takaichi, from the Liberal Democratic Party (PLD), was elected on Tuesday (21/10) as Japan’s first female prime minister, becoming the first woman to hold the position in the country’s history. At 64, Takaichi garnered 237 votes in the Lower House and 125 votes in the Upper House – a simple majority in both chambers. She entered the race with a weakened parliamentary base. The PLD holds 196 out of 465 seats in the House of Representatives and, without the support of historical ally Komeito (24 seats), would not reach the necessary 233 votes.
