Prior to 1845, all states in America were allowed to conduct elections within a 34-day window starting from the first Wednesday of December. However, differences in election outcomes among states and interests of transportation lobbyists led to concerns about standardizing election dates. The law to hold elections on a single day for all states in America was enacted on January 23, 1845 in the US Congress. This move aimed to level the playing field between agricultural and non-agricultural states during elections.
