Will Bolsonaro be imprisoned? Understanding the next steps after the publication of the judgement’s ruling on the coup plot at the STF

After the publication of the judgement’s ruling that sentenced former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to 27 years and three months in prison for an attempted coup, the deadline starts for the defendants’ defenses to file appeals against the decision. Bolsonaro is under house arrest as a preventive measure, but he may now have to start serving his sentence. This deadline is five days for declarations of clarification, used to clarify contradictions or omissions in the judgment. The lawyers of the defendants in the coup plot have already stated that they will use this instrument; however, this type of appeal generally does not change the outcome of the judgment. Following the filing of appeals, it is up to the rapporteur, Justice Alexandre de Moraes, to request a date for the trial, which can take place in physical or virtual plenary. The president of the panel, Flávio Dino, is responsible for setting the date.
