Will Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS be Visible in Brazil?

Among the many questions about the comet 3I/ATLAS, one of the main ones is whether it will be visible from Brazil. This interstellar visitor, the third object from outside the Solar System ever recorded, has just passed its closest point to the Sun, gaining brightness and getting ready to be observed again by telescopes on Earth.

Days before reaching perihelion (closest distance to the Sun) on Wednesday (29), the comet passed behind the star, becoming inaccessible to our planet. According to NASA, it will only start reappearing in the sky before dawn in the upcoming weeks as it moves away from the Sun and gains sufficient elongation to be observed.

According to TheSkyLive observation guide, the comet 3I/ATLAS will be mainly visible from the northern hemisphere in the first weeks after perihelion. During this period, its position in the sky still favors observers at lower latitudes, closer to the equator.

However, its visibility will be limited and possible only at very close to dawn, with a clear horizon, as the comet will be low in the sky and close to the Sun.

From early December, as its elongation increases, meaning when it is apparently further away from the Sun, observation will become more favorable, although still challenging. For Brazilian observers, this means the best chance to see it with telescopes will be in the first weeks of December when it will be in a more suitable position and less affected by the Sun’s light.
